About Coin
A Coin has two surfaces Obverse and Reverse. Obverse is also known as Head which depicts a symbol or Portrait of Ruler and Name of Country. Reverse Side depicts the Denomination or Value of the Coin, Year of Minting and Mint Mark. In Commemorative Coins of Republic of India the Denomination is depicted on the Obverse.

The Bombay (Mumbai) Mint

Bombay (Mumbai) Mint has a diamond under the date of the coin (year of issue). The Proof coins from this mint have a mint mark ‘B’ or ‘M’.










 The Calcutta (Kolkata) Mint

Calcutta mint has no mark under the date of the coin (year of issue). Many people confuse “c” found under some coins to be from calcutta mint. However, that symbol belongs to the Ottawa mint in Canada.






The Hyderabad Mint

Hyderabad Mint has a star under the date of the coin (year of the issue). The other mint marks from Hyderabad include a split diamond, and a dot in the diamond.














The Noida Mint

Noida mint has a dot under the year of issue (coin date).
















Government of India issued many coins minted by foreign mints during times of shortage of coins. Some coins were minted abroad and imported and these bear the mint marks of their origin. These coins are imported with the approval of Reserve Bank of India.
